Is Chengdu expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Chengdu is good value: cheaper than Beijing or Shanghai, and far cheaper than Western Europe for food, transport and hotels. Plan on about CN¥300 a day per person on a budget, CN¥710 mid-range and CN¥1,700 for comfort. Hot pot dinners, opera shows and day trips by train are the main costs; the metro and street snacks cost very little.

Where the money goes
Hotels are the main cost, though even central four-star hotels are moderately priced by international standards. Food is cheap at street level — noodles, dumplings and snacks cost little — but hot pot, especially in famous chains with lots of meat and seafood, adds up. Sights are individually cheap (the Panda Base, the Du Fu Thatched Cottage and Jinsha are each around CN¥50–70), but day trips to Leshan, Sanxingdui or Qingcheng add train fares, tickets and local buses. Evening shows such as Sichuan opera are a notable extra.
When it is cheaper
Prices are lowest in quiet months such as late November, December (outside Christmas-week events) and March. Hotel rates rise sharply during the Spring Festival and the 1–7 October Golden Week, when domestic travel peaks.
How to spend less
- Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with an international card before you arrive; it is the easiest way to pay for everything, including the metro.
- Use the metro and Didi rather than hotel taxis; most crosstown Didi rides are CN¥20–40.
- Eat lunch at small noodle and dumpling shops; skip the tourist restaurants on Jinli and Kuanzhai alleys.
- Book Panda Base and museum tickets on the official mini-programs to avoid resellers' mark-ups.
- Visit Leshan on a weekday, when you avoid queues and higher weekend demand for trains.
- Choose a hostel near Wenshu Monastery, close to metro line 1, for the cheapest central beds.
