Where to sleep for less
The lanes around Wenshu Monastery, on metro line 1, have the city's best concentration of hostels and guesthouses, with doubles around CN¥200–350 and dorm beds lower. Hostels near Kuanzhai Xiangzi and People's Park are also popular with backpackers.
Getting around cheaply
Use the metro for almost everything (about CN¥2–6 a ride), paying by QR code in Alipay or with a transport card. From Tianfu airport, metro line 18 takes about 45–60 minutes and is much cheaper than a taxi; Shuangliu airport is about 30 minutes from the centre on metro line 10. High-speed trains to Leshan cost roughly CN¥55–70.
A sample budget day
- Morning: Panda Base at opening (about CN¥55) by metro and shuttle
- Lunch: dan dan noodles and dumplings (about CN¥30)
- Afternoon: People's Park, tea at the Heming teahouse (about CN¥30), then free Wenshu Monastery
- Evening: chuan chuan skewers and a beer (about CN¥60), metro rides (about CN¥15)

More ways to save
- Choose chuan chuan over hot pot for a cheaper spicy dinner; you pay per skewer.
- Reserve free museums in advance — entry is free but often needs a booking with your passport.
- Travel to Leshan by high-speed train and local bus rather than a private tour.
- Drink tea in park teahouses rather than coffee chains; a cup lasts hours with free refills.
- Avoid travelling during Golden Week and the Spring Festival, when prices and crowds peak.
- Buy fruit and snacks at local markets and convenience stores rather than in tourist alleys.
