Is Chefchaouen safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Chefchaouen is a relaxed and generally safe town, with far less hassle than Fez or Marrakech. The realistic issues are men offering hashish, steep and slippery lanes, and unlit paths after dark on the hill to the Spanish Mosque. Violent crime against visitors is not a concern for most travellers.
The real risks
Hashish offers
Some men in the medina offer cannabis. Buying and using it recreationally is illegal and there are police checks on the roads; say a firm no thank you and keep walking.
Steep lanes and steps
The medina is stepped and lies at about 600 metres; the painted stones can be slippery after rain. Wear shoes with grip.
Dark paths
The path to the Spanish Mosque is unlit. Bring a phone torch for the walk down after sunset and go in a group if you can.
River crossings at Akchour
After heavy rain in winter and spring the river can be high and some crossings unsafe; ask locally and turn back if in doubt.
Overcharging
Agree grand taxi prices before you get in and check prices in shops and restaurants that do not display them.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas visitors need to avoid in the town. The lanes are quiet late at night, so stick to the main routes between the square and your riad. Be more careful on the unlit hill paths around the Spanish Mosque and on mountain trails without a guide.
Getting around safely
Inside the medina everything is on foot. Petit taxis run between the bus station and the medina for about 10–20 MAD. For Akchour and the villages, use grand taxis and agree the price first. CTM buses to Fez, Tangier and Tetouan are the most reliable option; avoid travelling the mountain roads at night.
Solo and women travellers
Many solo women find Chefchaouen one of the most comfortable places in Morocco. Comments in the street are less frequent than in Fez or Marrakech; a firm no and ignoring them usually works. Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, avoid the hill paths alone after dark and consider a local guide for longer hikes.
Health, water and heat
Most visitors drink bottled or filtered water rather than tap water. Summer days can reach about 34–35°C in July and August, so carry water and avoid hiking at midday; winter nights are close to freezing and many riads have little heating, so bring warm layers. Pharmacies in the town can help with minor problems.
