Is Chefchaouen expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
No, Chefchaouen is one of the cheaper places to visit in Morocco, a little cheaper than Fez and clearly cheaper than Marrakech. A realistic budget day is about 290 MAD per person (roughly €26), mid-range about 710 MAD, and most of the money goes on your riad and, if you go, the taxi to the Akchour waterfalls.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost: medina hostels and simple rooms cost about 200–400 MAD a night, blue-painted riads in the upper medina about 500–900 MAD, and hillside hotels with pools 1,000–2,500 MAD. Food is cheap, especially away from the restaurants on Outa el Hammam, and the town's sights are mostly free or cost a small fee, like the Kasbah. The one big extra is transport out of town: a grand taxi to Akchour, a local guide for Jebel el Kelaa (roughly 300–500 MAD a day) and long-distance buses from Fez or Tangier. A small tourist tax per person per night is added to most hotel bills.
When it is cheaper
Rooms are usually cheapest from November to March, when it is cold and wet; July, August and Moroccan holiday weekends are busiest with domestic visitors, and riads fill and charge more.
How to spend less
- Eat in the small places in the lanes below Outa el Hammam rather than on the square, where menus cost more for similar food.
- Share a grand taxi to Akchour with other travellers from your riad to split the 300–500 MAD fare.
- Walk everywhere: the medina is small, and the Spanish Mosque and Ras el Ma are free and on foot.
- Choose a riad with breakfast included; it often comes with jben goat's cheese, bread and olive oil.
- Book CTM bus tickets a day ahead in summer instead of paying for a private transfer.
- Buy blankets and jben in the upper medina and compare a few shops before paying; bargaining is normal.
