Is Capri safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Capri is very safe, with little crime. The realistic risks are crowds at the ports and in the Piazzetta, steep paths in the heat, and sea conditions at the Blue Grotto and when swimming from rocks.

The real risks

Crowds and pickpocketing

Marina Grande, the funicular queue and the Piazzetta are crowded at midday; keep bags closed and phones secure.

Steep paths

The walks to Villa Jovis, the Arco Naturale and the Fortini trail are steep with many steps; wear good shoes and carry water.

Rockfalls

Via Krupp has been closed for long periods because of rockfalls; respect closures.

Blue Grotto and sea

The grotto closes in rough seas or at high tide. Swim from rocks only in calm water.

Narrow roads

Buses and taxis share narrow roads with pedestrians; walk in single file on roads without pavements.

Last ferries

Late boats can sell out on summer Sundays; buy return tickets in advance.

Areas and times to take care

There are no unsafe areas. Take care on steep paths after dark, as some are poorly lit, and on the cliff edges at viewpoints.

Getting around safely

Buses and the funicular are safe but crowded; licensed open-top taxis wait at Marina Grande, the Piazzetta and Anacapri. Visitors cannot bring cars in summer.

Solo and women travellers

Capri is comfortable for solo women, with lively evenings in the Piazzetta and very low crime. Walking paths are best done in daylight, and taxis are easy to find for the evening.

Health, water and heat

Tap water in Italy is generally safe, but many visitors on Capri drink bottled water. Sun and dehydration are the main risks on summer walks. There is a hospital on the island; travel insurance is still important.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies.
