Is Budapest safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Budapest is generally safe for visitors, with low levels of violent crime, and the centre is busy and well lit in the evening. The realistic risks are pickpocketing, restaurant and bar overcharging, and unlicensed taxis. Most visitors who choose their own bars and check prices have no problems.
The real risks
Pickpocketing
Most common on trams 4 and 6, the M2 metro, at the Great Market Hall, on Váci utca and in the busy ruin bars of District VII. Keep bags closed and phones out of back pockets.
Bar invitation scam
Men are approached by friendly women and invited to a bar, where the bill runs to hundreds of thousands of forints and is enforced by security staff. Decline invitations from strangers and choose the bar yourself.
Restaurant overcharging
Some places on Váci utca and in the inner city use unclear menus, prices per 100 g and large added service charges. Foreign embassies have warned about this for years. Check prices before ordering.
Taxis
Unlicensed taxis overcharge. Use Bolt, Főtaxi or City Taxi, or the official taxi stand at the airport; licensed taxis are yellow with regulated fares.
Currency conversion
Menus priced in euros and card terminals that offer to charge in euros use poor rates. Pay in HUF.
Areas and times to take care
The centre is safe in the evening. District VII around the ruin bars is very busy and noisy at weekends, with drunk groups and pickpockets late at night. Take normal care around some of the big transport hubs, such as the underpasses at Keleti station and Blaha Lujza tér, late at night.
Getting around safely
Public transport is safe and covers the city with a night bus network after the trams and metro stop around midnight; tram 6 on the Grand Boulevard runs all night. Use Bolt or a licensed taxi company (Főtaxi, City Taxi) rather than street offers. From the airport, take the official taxi from the stand outside arrivals or the 100E airport bus.
Solo and women travellers
Budapest is generally comfortable for women travelling alone, including on public transport in the evening. Watch your drink in crowded ruin bars and clubs, decline drinks offered by strangers and use Bolt or a licensed taxi late at night. Thermal baths are mixed, with swimwear required in the main pools.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe to drink. Summers can be hot, with highs around 27–29°C and occasional heat waves above that, so carry water. In the thermal baths, limit time in the hottest pools if you have heart or blood pressure problems, and wear flip-flops. Pharmacies are marked 'Gyógyszertár' or 'Patika'.
