Is Barcelona safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Barcelona is safe in terms of violent crime, but it is one of Europe's worst cities for pickpocketing and phone theft, and most visitors who have a problem lose a phone or wallet rather than being hurt. With sensible habits, the risk drops sharply. Walking around the centre at night is normal and busy.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

Heaviest on La Rambla, in the Boqueria, on metro lines L3 and L1, at Sagrada Família and Park Güell, and on the beaches. Keep bags zipped and in front, and keep phones off café tables.

Beach theft

Bags left on the sand at Barceloneta while people swim are a common target. Take only what you need and leave someone with your things.

Distraction tricks

Someone points out a 'stain' on your clothes, asks you to sign something or drops something in front of you while an accomplice takes your bag. Hold your belongings and walk away.

Shell game (trileros) on La Rambla

The cup-and-ball game is rigged, with accomplices pretending to win. Do not bet.

Fake police

People claiming to be plain-clothes police asking to see your wallet or cards. Real police will not ask for your PIN or cash; offer to go to a police station.

Terrace and bar overcharging

Tourist menus around La Rambla and Plaça Reial, and pintxo sticks you did not eat. Check prices and keep your sticks on your plate.

Areas and times to take care

La Rambla, the lower Raval near the port and around Plaça Reial late at night are the main areas for theft, drug dealing and hassle; they are busy and fine to walk through, but keep valuables hidden and stick to lit streets after midnight. The beaches and the Port Olímpic nightlife strip see bag and phone theft at night. Gràcia, Eixample, Poble Sec and Sant Antoni are relaxed in the evening.

Getting around safely

Official taxis are black and yellow, metered, and easy to hail with a green light on the roof; airport rides carry a supplement (roughly €35–40 to the centre in total). Apps such as FreeNow and Cabify work, and Uber operates in limited form. The metro runs until about midnight Sunday to Thursday, until about 02:00 on Friday and all night on Saturday; NitBus night buses cover the rest.

Solo and women travellers

Solo women generally find Barcelona easy and sociable. The main risk is theft rather than harassment, though catcalling and pushy approaches can happen around La Rambla and nightlife areas late at night. Keep your drink in sight in crowded bars and clubs, use a taxi to get home from the Port Olímpic or the Raval late at night, and choose accommodation on well-lit streets.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink, though many people dislike its chlorine taste and buy bottled or use a filter jug. July and August highs are about 29°C with high humidity, and heatwaves go higher, so carry water and use sunscreen on the beach. Pharmacies (green cross) are common. EU visitors should carry an EHIC; others should have travel insurance.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies.
