Is Bahrain safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Bahrain is generally safe for visitors, with low levels of street crime and a calm atmosphere in the main tourist areas. The main practical risks are road traffic, the summer heat and occasional political demonstrations, which visitors should simply avoid.
The real risks
Traffic
Driving is fast and assertive on the highways. Take care crossing roads and drive defensively if you hire a car.
Heat
From June to September temperatures pass 40°C with high humidity. Plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning and evening.
Demonstrations
Protests occasionally take place, mostly in villages away from tourist areas. Avoid gatherings and follow local news.
Petty theft
Uncommon, but keep an eye on bags in the busy souq and at malls.
Local laws
Drugs carry severe penalties, public drunkenness is an offence and behaviour in public is expected to be respectful, especially during Ramadan.
Areas and times to take care
The Manama Souq, Adliya, Juffair, Seef, Muharraq and Bahrain Bay are all busy and comfortable for visitors, day and evening. Some villages have seen protests in the past; there is no reason for most tourists to go there, and you should avoid any demonstration you come across.
Getting around safely
Use metered taxis or Careem and Uber, which work well and show the fare in advance. Buses exist but are infrequent and do not reach sites such as the Tree of Life. Late at night, app-based rides are the easiest option.
Solo and women travellers
Solo women generally find Bahrain relaxed by Gulf standards, and many expatriate women live and work there. Dress modestly in the souq, old quarters and mosques (shoulders and knees covered), use app taxis and sit in the back, and expect some staring in traditional areas. Hotel pools and beach clubs are fine for swimwear.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is desalinated and generally considered safe, but most people drink bottled water. Heat stroke and dehydration are the main health risks in summer: carry water, wear a hat and avoid the midday sun. Healthcare in Manama is of a good standard; take travel insurance.
