Is Andros safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Andros is a very safe island, with low crime and a quiet, family atmosphere. The realistic risks are on the roads and trails: narrow mountain roads, unpaved tracks to beaches, slippery stone paths and strong summer wind at sea. Crime against visitors is not a concern for most travellers.

The real risks

Mountain roads

Roads are narrow and winding, with goats and blind bends. Drive slowly, and check whether your rental insurance covers unpaved tracks before heading to remote beaches.

Trails

The stone paths of the Andros Routes can be slippery near springs and streams. Wear proper shoes, carry water and download the route maps, as mobile signal drops in the valleys.

Meltemi wind

The north wind can blow hard for days in July and August, making east-coast beaches such as Paraporti rough. Choose the sheltered west or south coast on windy days and do not swim far out.

Heat

Midday sun on exposed paths is strong in summer. Start walks early, around 7:00, and finish before midday.

Ferry disruption

Strong wind can delay or cancel boats, especially in winter. Leave some slack before an onward flight from Athens.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas visitors need to avoid on Andros. Take normal care with belongings at the busy ferry port in Rafina and at Gavrio when boats arrive in August.

Getting around safely

Taxis wait at Gavrio for the boats and can be booked by phone; there is no ride-hailing in practice. KTEL buses link Gavrio, Batsi, Chora and Korthi a few times a day, but there is little or no late-evening service, so plan your return after dinner or drive yourself (and do not drink and drive).

Solo and women travellers

Solo women generally feel at ease on Andros: villages are small, people know each other and harassment is uncommon. Usual precautions apply: tell someone your route before a long solo hike, avoid remote trails after dark, and arrange taxis in advance in the evening.

Health, water and heat

The island is known for its springs and the local water is widely drunk, but where in doubt ask your host or buy bottled water. Sun and heat on the trails are the main issues in summer. There is a health centre in Chora and pharmacies in the main villages; serious cases are transferred to the mainland.

Emergency: 112 (general emergency number in Greece and the EU); 166 for ambulance, 100 for police.
