Is Andros expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Andros is moderately priced for a Greek island: cheaper than Mykonos or Santorini, similar to Tinos or Naxos. A realistic budget day is about €70 per person, mid-range about €140, and the main costs are your room and a rental car, which you will almost certainly need.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest cost, especially in July and August when Athenian families fill Batsi and Chora; simple rooms in Gavrio are the cheapest. The second big item is transport: the island is large and mountainous, buses run only a few times a day, and a rental car plus fuel is the practical way to reach trailheads and beaches. Ferries add €20–40 each way per person, more with a car. Food is fair by island standards, with taverna meals at €15–25 per person, though fish is priced by the kilo and can push a bill up. Greece also adds a per-room, per-night climate resilience fee, higher from April to October.
When it is cheaper
May, June and September are usually noticeably cheaper than late July and August, often by a quarter or more on rooms; April and October are cheaper still, but some hotels and tavernas are closed.
How to spend less
- Stay in Gavrio (doubles about €50–80) if you are on a tight budget; it is the port and the cheapest base.
- Travel as a foot passenger and rent a car on the island rather than taking your own car on the ferry, if you only stay a few days.
- Book the rental car early for July and August, when prices rise and cars run out.
- Ask the price of fish by the kilo before ordering.
- Spend your days on the Andros Routes footpaths, which cost nothing.
- Fill your bottle at the island's springs, such as Sariza in Apoikia, instead of buying water.
