How to get from Olympia to Peloponnese

Olympia is itself in the western Peloponnese. From there, Kalamata is about 2 h by car, Nafplio about 3 h via Tripoli, and Sparta about 2 h 30. KTEL buses connect via Pyrgos, but a car makes it much easier to tour the peninsula.

Tips

Common questions

How do I get from Olympia to Kalamata?

By car it takes about 2 h, via Pyrgos and the coast or the Ionian motorway. By bus, take KTEL to Pyrgos, then a bus to Kalamata, which can take 3–4 h with the change. Check current timetables, as connections are limited.

How long is the drive from Olympia to Nafplio?

About 3 h, mostly via Tripoli on the Moreas motorway. Tolls are a few euros. You can stop at Ancient Mycenae, about 20 minutes before Nafplio. The route crosses the mountains of Arcadia. By bus, the trip needs changes in Pyrgos and Tripoli and takes most of a day; check current KTEL timetables.

Is there a train from Olympia to other parts of the Peloponnese?

There is no regular passenger rail link from Olympia across the Peloponnese. Most of the old Peloponnese railway is no longer in passenger use. Use KTEL buses or drive instead. Occasional tourist or local trains have run near Olympia, for example towards Pyrgos and Katakolo, but they are not a way to cross the peninsula; check locally for any current service.

Do I need a car to explore the Peloponnese from Olympia?

A car is strongly recommended. KTEL buses connect the main towns but often require changes and run less often on Sundays. Many archaeological sites, beaches and villages are hard to reach without a car. Car hire is available in Pyrgos, Kalamata and other larger towns, and at Kalamata airport.
