Common questions
How do I get from Nafplio to Kalamata?
Drive via Argos and Tripoli, then take the A7 motorway to Kalamata, about 2 hours with tolls of roughly €8–12. By public transport, take a KTEL bus from Nafplio to Tripoli and change to a KTEL bus to Kalamata, about 3–3 h 30 in total. Check current timetables, as connections are few.
Is there a train from Nafplio to the rest of the Peloponnese?
No. Passenger trains no longer run on the old Peloponnese network around Nafplio, Tripoli or Kalamata. The only regular trains in the region are the suburban line from Athens to Kiato and Aigio and the Kalavryta rack railway. For everything else, use buses or a car.
Do I need a car to explore the Peloponnese from Nafplio?
It is strongly recommended. KTEL buses link the main towns, such as Nafplio, Argos, Tripoli, Sparti and Kalamata, but sites like Mystras, the Mani villages, Monemvasia and Ancient Messene are awkward to reach without a car. Organised tours from Nafplio cover Mycenae and Epidaurus.
What are the main stops between Nafplio and Kalamata?
Popular stops include Tripoli, the centre of Arcadia, and a detour to Mystras near Sparti, about 1 h from Tripoli. West of the motorway, Ancient Messene is about 30 km from Kalamata. Driving the coast via Leonidio and Monemvasia is a longer alternative taking most of a day.
