Tips

Common questions

How long does the bus take?

Usually about 9–11 hours, depending on traffic, roadworks and weather. The road crosses the Magdalena valley and climbs again into the mountains. Many companies run day and overnight buses from Bogotá's Terminal Salitre. Landslides in the rainy season can cause long delays, so leave margin if you have a flight to catch.

Which Medellín airport should I fly to?

Most flights from Bogotá land at José María Córdova International in Rionegro, about 45–60 minutes from central Medellín by road. A smaller number of regional flights use Olaya Herrera, which is inside the city and very convenient. Check which airport your ticket shows, as the transfer time differs a lot.

What is the cheapest way?

The bus is usually cheapest, but low-cost flights booked ahead can cost only slightly more and save most of a day. When comparing, include baggage fees and the airport transfer to Rionegro, which costs extra by taxi or a few dollars by airport bus.

Is there a train?

No. Colombia has no long-distance passenger rail service between Bogotá and Medellín. Your choices are flying, taking a long-distance bus, or driving. Within Medellín there is a metro and cable car system that connects well with the bus terminals.
