Common questions
How long is the train from Bergen to Oslo?
About 6 hours 30 minutes to 7 hours on the Bergen Railway, run by Vy. The line crosses the Hardangervidda plateau, reaching about 1,222 metres at Finse. There are several day trains and a night train. Check current timetables, as maintenance can cause replacement buses on some days.
Is flying quicker?
Yes. The flight takes about 50 minutes, and around 3 hours door to door once you add airport transfers and security. SAS, Norwegian and Widerøe fly the route many times a day. Flying makes sense if you are short of time, but the train shows you the mountains.
Can I combine it with the Flåm Railway?
Yes. Change at Myrdal on the Bergen Railway for the Flåm Railway down to Flåm, and continue by boat and bus via the Nærøyfjord. This combination is often sold as Norway in a Nutshell. It turns the trip into a long day or a stopover, so book the pieces ahead.
Do I need to book ahead?
For the cheapest fares, yes. Vy's Minipris tickets are released months ahead and go quickly, especially in summer. Seat reservations are included with tickets. Flights can also be cheap when booked early. Last-minute train tickets are available but much more expensive.
