- In winter, when ferries stop, the bus is the main public option.
Common questions
Is there a ferry from Amalfi to Sorrento?
Yes, but mainly from about April to October. Several companies run boats from Amalfi and Positano to Sorrento, taking roughly 40 minutes to 1 h 15. There are no ferries in winter, and summer sailings can be cancelled when the sea is rough. Check current timetables, especially at the start and end of the season.
What is the cheapest way?
The SITA Sud bus. It costs only a few euros and runs along the coast road from Amalfi via Positano to Sorrento in about 1 h 30–2 h. It is slow and crowded in summer, and you may have to stand or wait for the next bus, but it runs all year and needs no booking.
Should I drive the Amalfi Coast road?
Only if you are a confident driver. The road is narrow, has many hairpin bends and shares space with buses. In summer traffic is heavy and parking is scarce and expensive in every town. Traffic restrictions based on number plates have applied in peak season. Most visitors find the bus or ferry less stressful.
Can I do it as a day trip?
Yes. Amalfi and Positano are easy day trips from Sorrento and vice versa. A common plan is to take the ferry one way and the bus the other way, which gives sea views both ways. Leave margin for the last departure, because the final bus and boat of the day can be full in summer.
