Common questions
Is the Amalfi Coast or Sorrento cheaper?
Sorrento. Our mid-range estimate is about €230 per person per day there against about €285 on the Amalfi Coast. The gap is mostly hotels: rooms with sea views in Positano and Ravello are among the most expensive in Italy in high season. Restaurant prices are closer, though Sorrento has more ordinary, local-priced places.
How do I get from Sorrento to the Amalfi Coast?
By SITA bus along the coast road, about 50 minutes to an hour to Positano and roughly 1 h 30 to 1 h 45 to Amalfi, longer in summer traffic, and buses fill up. From about April to October, ferries also link Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi and avoid the road. Check current timetables, as services change by season.
Is it better to stay in Sorrento and visit the Amalfi Coast?
For many people, yes. Sorrento is cheaper, flatter and has the train to Pompeii and Naples plus ferries to Capri. The trade-off is that you see the Amalfi Coast as day trips. If the views and evenings in Positano or Ravello matter most, stay at least two or three nights on the coast itself.
When is the best time to visit?
Our data puts June, September and October as best for both. July and August are hot, around 31°C, crowded and most expensive. Many hotels and ferries on the Amalfi Coast close or reduce service from November to March, while Sorrento stays more open year-round, with winters around 12 to 13°C.
