Why visit Sukhothai?

Sukhothai is a historic town in the lower north of Thailand, once the capital of the first Thai kingdom in the 13th century. The ruins of the old capital form the Sukhothai Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a peaceful place, far quieter than Ayutthaya.

The best way to explore the historical park is by bicycle, riding between temples set among lotus ponds and trees. Wat Mahathat, the former royal temple, has rows of columns and seated Buddha images. Wat Si Chum holds a huge seated Buddha, Phra Achana, framed by a narrow opening in the walls. Wat Sa Si sits on an island in a pond and is especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset. Sukhothai is closely associated with the Loy Krathong festival in November, when the park is lit with candles and floating offerings. The related site of Si Satchanalai, further north, makes a good day trip, and a bowl of Sukhothai noodles is the local speciality.
