Why visit Kanchanaburi?
Kanchanaburi, about two to three hours west of Bangkok, combines moving Second World War history with some of Thailand's most beautiful rivers, waterfalls and national parks. It is where the Death Railway, built by Allied prisoners of war and Asian labourers for the Japanese army, crossed the Khwae Yai River.
Walk across the Bridge over the River Kwai, visit the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre, and take the train along the wooden Wang Pho viaduct that clings to the cliffs above the river. Hellfire Pass, further west, is a cutting dug by hand, with a memorial museum and walking trail. Erawan National Park has a seven-tiered waterfall with turquoise pools where you can swim, and Sai Yok and Si Nakharin are good for more waterfalls and lakes. Many visitors stay in floating raft houses on the river. Kanchanaburi is quiet and good value, with night markets for grilled fish, som tam and mango sticky rice.
