Why visit Hua Hin?

Hua Hin is Thailand's oldest beach resort, about three hours south of Bangkok on the Gulf of Thailand. It became fashionable in the 1920s when the royal family built summer palaces here, and it is still a relaxed, family-friendly town with long beaches, golf courses and good seafood.

The red-and-white Hua Hin railway station with its royal waiting room is one of the prettiest in Thailand. Visit Maruekhathaiyawan Palace, a teak summer palace on stilts by the sea, and walk the main beach to Khao Takiab, the Chopstick Hill with its temple and monkeys. The night market and Cicada Market are good for street food and crafts. Day trips go to Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, where the Phraya Nakhon Cave holds a pavilion lit by a shaft of sunlight, and to the Pala-U waterfall. Hua Hin is also handy for Pranburi beaches and vineyards. Eat grilled squid, crab, pad thai and mango sticky rice.
