Why visit Ayutthaya?

Ayutthaya was the capital of the Kingdom of Siam for more than four centuries, from 1351 until it was sacked by the Burmese army in 1767. Its ruins, on an island formed by three rivers about 80 km north of Bangkok, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most impressive historic sites in Southeast Asia.

The Historical Park is best explored by bicycle or tuk-tuk. See the three great chedis of Wat Phra Si Sanphet, the Buddha head entwined in tree roots at Wat Mahathat, the Khmer-style prang of Wat Chaiwatthanaram on the riverbank, especially at sunset, and the giant reclining Buddha of Wat Lokayasutharam. Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon and the still-active Wat Phanan Choeng are just outside the island, and the Bang Pa-In Royal Palace lies a short ride south. Ayutthaya is an easy day trip from Bangkok by train, but staying the night lets you see the temples lit up and visit the evening markets. Try boat noodles and roti sai mai, the local candy-floss crepes.
