Why visit St. Barts?

St. Barts, officially Saint-Barthélemy, is a small French overseas collectivity in the northern Lesser Antilles. Its capital, Gustavia, is named after King Gustav III of Sweden, as the island was a Swedish colony for nearly a century. Today it is known for its sheltered bays, French cuisine and upscale atmosphere.

Gustavia's harbour is lined with red-roofed buildings, and the Wall House Museum covers the island's Swedish and French history. A short walk leads to Shell Beach, a cove covered in small shells. Saint-Jean Beach sits right next to the airport, where planes land on a famously short runway over a hill. Gouverneur and Saline are two undeveloped beaches backed by hills and salt ponds. Colombier Beach can only be reached by boat or along a walking trail from the northwest tip of the island. The surrounding waters are part of a marine reserve, with good snorkelling around the rocky coast. Dining ranges from French bistros to beach restaurants serving Creole dishes.
