Why visit Banos?

Baños de Agua Santa is a small town in central Ecuador, in the province of Tungurahua. It lies in a green valley at the foot of the Tungurahua volcano, on the edge of the Andes where the mountains drop toward the Amazon. The town is known for its hot springs, waterfalls and outdoor activities.

The Ruta de las Cascadas follows the Pastaza River downhill past a series of waterfalls and is popular by rented bicycle. The largest of these, the Pailón del Diablo, can be viewed from walkways and suspension bridges close to the falling water. Above town, the Casa del Árbol has a swing at the edge of a slope with views toward the volcano on clear days. Several thermal pools in town, including the Termas de la Virgen, are fed by volcanic springs. Rafting, canyoning and ziplining are offered by many local operators. The Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Agua Santa is the town's main church and a pilgrimage site. Street vendors pull and sell melcocha, a chewy sugar cane taffy.
