Why visit Bonaire?

Bonaire is one of the ABC islands in the southern Caribbean, off the coast of Venezuela, and a special municipality of the Netherlands. Its capital is Kralendijk, a small, colourful town on the sheltered west coast. The island is dry and flat in the south, with cactus-covered hills in the north.

Bonaire is one of the world's best-known shore diving destinations, as the reefs of Bonaire National Marine Park start just metres from the coast. Klein Bonaire, an uninhabited islet opposite Kralendijk, is a short boat trip away and has excellent snorkelling. In the south, pink salt pans and restored slave huts recall the island's history of salt production. Flamingos feed in the salt flats and at Gotomeer lagoon in the north. Washington Slagbaai National Park covers the northwest of the island, with rough roads, cacti, lizards and quiet bays. Lac Bay on the east coast has shallow, windy water that is ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Rincon, inland, is the island's oldest village. Local food includes goat stew and fresh fish.
