Why visit Roatan?

Roatán is the largest of the Bay Islands of Honduras, lying in the Caribbean Sea off the country's northern coast. It sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest barrier reef system in the world. English is widely spoken on the island alongside Spanish, a legacy of its Afro-Caribbean and British history.

The island is one of the most popular places in the Caribbean to learn to dive, with reefs close to shore. West End is a small village with dive shops, restaurants and a laid-back seafront. Nearby West Bay Beach has white sand and calm, clear water, with snorkeling just off the beach. Gumbalimba Park and Carambola Gardens offer walks among tropical plants and wildlife. The eastern end of the island is quieter, with mangroves and fishing communities such as Punta Gorda, a Garifuna settlement. Local food includes baleadas, fried fish and coconut bread. Ferries connect Roatán with La Ceiba on the mainland.
