Why visit Monteverde?

Monteverde is a mountain area in the Tilarán range of northwestern Costa Rica, known worldwide for its cloud forest. The forest is often wrapped in mist, which supports a dense mix of mosses, orchids, ferns and wildlife. The small town of Santa Elena serves as the base for visitors.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve has well-marked trails through the forest and across the continental divide. The nearby Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve is a quieter alternative at a slightly higher elevation. Hanging bridges let visitors walk at the level of the forest canopy. Zipline courses in the area are among the longest in Costa Rica. Birdwatchers come in search of the resplendent quetzal, which is most often seen in the drier months. Guided night walks reveal tarantulas, frogs, sloths and other nocturnal animals. Local farms offer tours that show how coffee, sugar cane and chocolate are grown and processed.
