Why visit Tamarindo?

Tamarindo is a beach town on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, in the northwestern province of Guanacaste. It grew from a fishing village into one of the country's best-known surf destinations. The region has a long dry season, making it a reliable choice for sun and sea.

The main beach has consistent waves and many surf schools for beginners. Just north, across the estuary, Playa Grande is part of Las Baulas National Marine Park, an important nesting site for leatherback sea turtles. Boat and kayak tours explore the mangroves of the Tamarindo estuary, where crocodiles and birds are common. Playa Langosta, to the south, is quieter and good for sunset walks. Sailing trips along the coast often include snorkeling stops. Nearby beaches such as Playa Conchal and Playa Avellanas are easy day trips. The town has a lively choice of restaurants and bars, and casados, a traditional plate of rice, beans, salad and meat or fish, are found everywhere.
