Why visit Ouro Preto?

Ouro Preto is a historic mining town in the mountains of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. It was the centre of the eighteenth-century gold rush and served as the state capital until the end of the nineteenth century. Its baroque churches and steep cobbled streets are protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Church of São Francisco de Assis is the town's masterpiece, with a facade and carvings by the sculptor Aleijadinho and a painted ceiling by Manuel da Costa Ataide. The Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Pilar is known for its lavish gilded interior. On Praca Tiradentes, the Museu da Inconfidência tells the story of the 1789 independence plot known as the Inconfidência Mineira. The Casa dos Contos, a former tax and treasury building, has displays on the colonial gold economy. Nearby Mariana, the first capital of Minas Gerais, is a short trip away, and on the road between them you can descend into the old Mina da Passagem gold mine. Local craftspeople sell carvings and pots made from soapstone. Minas Gerais cooking is famous across Brazil, so try pao de queijo, feijao tropeiro and frango com quiabo.
