Why visit Martinique?

Martinique is a French overseas region in the Lesser Antilles, with Fort-de-France as its capital. The north of the island is mountainous and green, dominated by the Mont Pelée volcano, while the south has calmer bays and white-sand beaches. French and Creole culture shape its language, music and food.

In Fort-de-France, see the Schoelcher Library, an ornate iron building, and the gardens of La Savane park. Saint-Pierre, once the island's main city, was destroyed by the eruption of Mont Pelée in 1902, and its ruins can still be visited. Hikers can climb Mont Pelée on marked trails when the weather is clear. The Jardin de Balata, in the hills above the capital, displays tropical plants with views of the Pitons du Carbet. Martinique is famous for rhum agricole, made from fresh sugarcane juice, and distilleries such as Habitation Clément and Saint-James welcome visitors. In Les Trois-Îlets, the La Pagerie museum marks the birthplace of Empress Joséphine. Les Salines, near Sainte-Anne, is one of the island's best-known beaches. Try accras, colombo curry and fresh fish with sauce chien.
