Its name means something like "the bedsheets of Maranhão", because from above the endless white sand dunes look like sheets spread out to dry. The usual base is the town of Barreirinhas, on the Preguiças River. From there, 4x4 trucks drive over sandy tracks to the edge of the dunes, and you walk the rest of the way to popular lagoons such as Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita. Sunset over the dunes is a highlight of any visit. A boat trip down the Preguiças River stops at small villages, beaches and a lighthouse with views over the coast, and the quiet village of Atins is a good place to stay longer. Most travellers fly to São Luís and continue by road to Barreirinhas. The best time to visit is about June to September, when the lagoons are full and the weather is sunny.
