Why visit Koh Tao?

Koh Tao is a small granite island in the Gulf of Thailand, north of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, reached by fast ferry from Chumphon or Samui. Its name means Turtle Island, and it is one of the most popular places in the world to learn to scuba dive, with dozens of dive schools and warm, calm water for much of the year.

Dive sites such as Chumphon Pinnacle, Sail Rock, Shark Island and the wreck of the HTMS Sattakut have barracuda, groupers and, in season, whale sharks. Snorkellers can swim straight off the beach at Aow Leuk, Tanote Bay and Shark Bay, and hike to the John-Suwan viewpoint. Take a longtail boat to Koh Nang Yuan, three islets joined by a sandbar, with a classic viewpoint at the top. Sairee Beach is the long main beach with sunset bars, while Mae Haad is the ferry pier and Chalok Baan Kao is quieter in the south. Try fresh grilled fish, green curry and banana roti.
