How many days do you need in Koh Tao?
Koh Tao is tiny, but slow transfers mean a 2-day trip is rushed. Four days lets you tackle the classic Sairee Beach to Koh Nang Yuan circuit, snorkel Shark Bay's turtles, and dive world-class spots like Chumphon Pinnacle without spending half your time on ferries.
Short answer

2 days
Focus on essentials: take a morning longtail boat to Koh Nang Yuan's viewpoint and sandbar. Afternoon snorkeling at Tanote Bay and Shark Bay for blacktip reef sharks. Finish with sunsets and seafood at Sairee Beach.
You give up: You miss scuba diving, John-Suwan Viewpoint hikes, Freedom Beach, and quieter east-coast bays like Hin Wong.
4 days
Covers the whole island smoothly. Dive Chumphon Pinnacle or Sail Rock, hike to John-Suwan Viewpoint overlooking Chalok Baan Kao, kayak around Ao Leuk, and enjoy full days on Koh Nang Yuan and Sairee Beach without rushing ferry connections.
You give up: Little missed on Koh Tao itself, though you lose time for extended stay-and-play relaxing or taking advanced dive certifications.
6 days
Complete island immersion. Complete an Open Water dive course, explore hidden coves like Mango Bay via private boat, hike to West Coast Viewpoint, and take relaxed evening paddleboard sessions off Sairee Beach.
You give up: Consumes nearly a week of a Thailand itinerary that could otherwise go toward Koh Phangan or Ang Thong Marine Park.
If you can stay longer
An extra 2-3 days lets you complete a PADI dive certification or take a day trip by speedboat to Ang Thong National Marine Park to kayak hidden lagoons and hike the Emerald Lake viewpoint.

Common questions
How do you get to Koh Tao safely and reliably?
Take a high-speed catamaran (Lomprayah) from Koh Samui or Koh Phangan, or an overnight sleeper ferry from Surat Thani or Chumphon. Book ferry tickets in advance during peak season to secure morning arrivals.
When is the best time to visit Koh Tao?
December to April offers the clearest water and sunniest days. July and August are also good. Avoid November, which brings heavy monsoon rains, rough seas, and poor underwater visibility that shuts down diving.
Do I need a scooter to get around the island?
Scooters are popular, but Koh Tao's steep, sandy roads cause frequent accidents. Songthaew (taxi trucks) or hiring longtail boats for beach-hopping are safer alternatives if you are not an experienced motorbiker.
