Why visit Jericoacoara?

Jericoacoara, or simply Jeri, is a former fishing village on the coast of Ceará in northeast Brazil, surrounded by sand dunes and protected inside Jericoacoara National Park. The streets are made of sand, there are no tall buildings, and many people walk barefoot from their guesthouse to the beach. Over the years it has become one of Brazil's favourite beach escapes, yet it still keeps a relaxed village feel, with forró music, caipirinhas and fresh seafood in the evenings.

Every evening, crowds climb the big Sunset Dune to watch the sun drop into the Atlantic. A walk or buggy ride along the coast leads to Pedra Furada, a natural rock arch shaped by the sea. Inland, the freshwater lagoons Lagoa do Paraíso and Lagoa Azul are famous for hammocks strung right over the water. Strong, steady winds make Jeri a great place for kitesurfing and windsurfing, and you can also try sandboarding or ride horses along the beach. Getting there is part of the adventure: buses and transfers come from Fortaleza, and the last stretch crosses sandy tracks in 4x4 vehicles, since ordinary cars cannot drive into the village. A regional airport near the town of Cruz shortens the trip. The windiest and driest months are roughly July to December.
