Why visit Guadeloupe?

Guadeloupe is a French overseas region in the Lesser Antilles, made up of a butterfly-shaped main island and several smaller islands. Its two wings, Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, are separated by a narrow channel called the Rivière Salée. Basse-Terre is volcanic and covered in rainforest, while Grande-Terre is flatter, with beaches and sugarcane fields.

On Basse-Terre, hike towards the summit of La Soufrière, an active volcano inside Guadeloupe National Park. The Carbet Falls are a series of waterfalls on the volcano's slopes, reached by forest trails. Off Malendure Beach, the Cousteau Reserve around the Pigeon Islets is a popular spot for snorkelling and diving. In Pointe-à-Pitre, the Mémorial ACTe is a large museum dedicated to the history of slavery and the slave trade. At the eastern tip of Grande-Terre, Pointe des Châteaux offers rocky cliffs and wide ocean views. Ferries connect the main island with Les Saintes and Marie-Galante, both known for quiet beaches and traditional villages. Local food includes accras, bokit sandwiches and fish blaff, along with locally made rum.
