How many days in Zermatt? 3 days below the Matterhorn

By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated

Zermatt is a car-free Swiss mountain village at the foot of the Matterhorn (4,478 m), the most recognisable mountain in the Alps. Surrounded by 38 peaks over 4,000 metres, it is one of the world's great places for hiking in summer and skiing all year. Three days gives you three different mountain viewpoints, Gornergrat, the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and Sunnegga-Rothorn, the famous Five Lakes Walk, and time to enjoy the village. Plan around the weather: the Matterhorn is often hidden in cloud, so keep the viewpoints flexible.

Short answer

3 days is the sweet spot2 days is the minimum worth it

Two days covers Gornergrat and the Five Lakes Walk. The third adds the Glacier Paradise and spare time for clouds.

The 3-day plan, day by day

Day 1: Gornergrat and the village

Morning. Take the Gornergrat Bahn (about CHF 100-130 return, cheaper with Swiss passes), a cog railway built in 1898, to 3,089 metres for a panorama of the Matterhorn, the Monte Rosa massif and the Gorner Glacier, one of the largest in the Alps.

Afternoon. Walk part of the way down, for example from Rotenboden past the Riffelsee, where the Matterhorn is reflected in the lake, to Riffelberg, then take the train.

Evening. Walk the Hinterdorf, with old larch-wood barns on stone discs to keep out mice, and visit the Matterhorn Museum, about the first ascent in 1865 and its tragedy. Have a raclette or fondue for dinner.

Go up early: the morning is usually clearest, and the first trains catch the sunrise on the Matterhorn.

Day 2: The Five Lakes Walk

Morning. Take the underground funicular to Sunnegga and the gondola to Blauherd, then hike the 5-Seenweg (Five Lakes Walk, about 9.8 km, 2.5-3 hours, mostly downhill): Stellisee, Grindjisee, Grünsee, Moosjisee and Leisee, several of them with Matterhorn reflections.

Afternoon. Stop for lunch at a mountain restaurant like the ones in Findeln, a hamlet of old chalets, then continue down to Zermatt, or swim at the Leisee, which has a small beach for children.

Evening. See the Gorner Gorge (Gornerschlucht), wooden walkways through a narrow canyon carved by a glacial river, near the village.

The Five Lakes Walk is usually open from late June to early October, depending on snow.

Day 3: Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

Morning. Ride the cable cars, including the 3S cable car and the Matterhorn Glacier Ride, to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at Klein Matterhorn (3,883 m), the highest cable car station in Europe (about CHF 120-150 return). See the Glacier Palace, an ice cave inside the glacier, and the view of 38 four-thousanders, including Mont Blanc.

Afternoon. Skiers can ski on the glacier even in summer. Walkers can descend to Schwarzsee for a mountain lake and the chapel below the Matterhorn's north face, with views of the Hörnli ridge used by climbers.

Evening. Leave by the Glacier Express (about 8 hours to St. Moritz) or by regular train to Visp and the rest of Switzerland.

The altitude can cause headaches; move slowly and drink water. The Glacier Ride also connects to Cervinia in Italy.

Only have 2 days?

With 2 days, do Days 1 and 2, and choose the best weather day for Gornergrat.

Got extra days?

With more time, take the Glacier Express, visit Saas-Fee, or hike to the Hörnlihütte (3,260 m), the base camp for the Matterhorn's ascent.

Zermatt is car-free: park in Täsch and take the shuttle train (12 minutes), or arrive by train from Visp (about 1 hour). In the village, walk or use electric taxis and buses. A Peak Pass covers the mountain railways and cable cars for several days; the Swiss Travel Pass gives a discount on the lifts.

What to eat in Zermatt

Try raclette (melted cheese scraped onto potatoes), cheese fondue, rösti, Walliser Teller (dried meat, cheese and rye bread from the Valais), and Valais wines like Fendant and Cornalin. Mountain restaurants in Findeln are famous. A simple meal costs CHF 30-50; dinner CHF 60-120.

Best time to visit

July to September for hiking, when the trails and lakes are clear of snow. December to April is the ski season, with skiing on the glacier all year. Late September is quieter with clear skies. May, June and November have some lifts closed for maintenance.

Common questions

Will I see the Matterhorn?

Not always: clouds often hide it, especially in the afternoon. Check the webcams in the morning and go to the viewpoints when it is clear.

Which viewpoint is best?

Gornergrat for the classic panorama and glacier; the Five Lakes Walk for reflections; the Glacier Paradise for altitude and glaciers. All three if you have time.

Can I drive to Zermatt?

No: private cars are not allowed. Park in Täsch and take the shuttle train.

Is Zermatt good for families?

Yes: easy trails, lakes with beaches, the Gornergrat train, Wolli's adventure park at Sunnegga and the glacier ice palace.

Is a Swiss Travel Pass worth it for Zermatt?

It covers the train to Zermatt and gives 50% off Gornergrat and other lifts. If you travel around Switzerland, it is usually worth it.

Can I ski in summer?

Yes: the Theodul Glacier near the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise has Europe's largest summer ski area.

Can I climb the Matterhorn?

Only experienced alpinists with a mountain guide, after training. The Hörnli ridge is the normal route, from July to September.

How do I get to Zermatt from Zurich or Geneva?

By train via Visp, about 3.5 hours from Zurich and about 3.5-4 hours from Geneva.

Is Zermatt expensive?

Very: it is among the most expensive resorts in Switzerland. Save by staying in Täsch and buying food in the village supermarkets.

When are the lakes ice-free?

From about late June to October. In early summer, some lakes still have snow around them.

Can I see the Matterhorn from Italy?

Yes: the Matterhorn Glacier Ride connects Zermatt with Cervinia (Breuil-Cervinia) in Italy across the border. From the Italian side, the mountain is called Monte Cervino and looks quite different.

Is there a Matterhorn museum?

Yes: the Matterhorn Museum, Zermatlantis, in the village centre tells the story of the first ascent in 1865, when four climbers died on the descent, and of Zermatt's transformation into a resort.
