Is Zermatt safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Zermatt is very safe, with almost no crime. The real risks are mountain hazards: altitude, rapidly changing weather, glacier terrain and, in winter, avalanches. Follow marked trails and local advice.

The real risks

Altitude

At the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (3,883 m), altitude can cause headaches; move slowly and drink water.

Mountain weather

Conditions change fast even in summer; carry layers, sun protection and water.

Glaciers

Never walk on glaciers without a guide and equipment; crevasses are hidden.

Avalanches

In winter, stay on marked pistes unless with a guide, and check the avalanche bulletin.

Steep trails

Some paths are exposed; wear proper boots and turn back in bad weather.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas to avoid in the village. In the mountains, respect closed trails and follow signage. Off-piste skiing and high routes should be done only with a certified guide.

Getting around safely

Zermatt is car-free: arrive by train via Visp or park in Täsch. Electric taxis and buses run in the village. Mountain railways and cable cars are safe and well maintained.

Solo and women travellers

Zermatt is very safe for women travelling alone. On high or remote hikes, share your route with someone and consider joining guided groups for glacier or high-alpine routes.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is excellent. The sun is intense at altitude, so wear sunscreen and sunglasses even on cloudy days. Mountain rescue (Air Zermatt, Rega) is expensive; make sure your insurance covers it.

Emergency: 112 (general); police 117, ambulance 144, Rega air rescue 1414
