How many days in Seattle? 3 days of Pike Place, the Space Needle and Mount Rainier

By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated

Seattle sits between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, with snow-capped Mount Rainier (4,392 m) on the horizon on clear days. It is the city of the first Starbucks, grunge music, tech giants and excellent seafood. Three days covers Pike Place Market and the new waterfront, the Space Needle and the glass art of Chihuly, the quirky neighbourhoods of Fremont and Ballard, a ferry ride on the Sound, and a day trip to Mount Rainier National Park. Bring layers: the weather changes fast.

Short answer

The 3-day plan, day by day

Day 1: Pike Place and downtown

Morning. Visit Pike Place Market (1907), one of the oldest continuously operating public markets in the US: watch the fishmongers throw salmon, see the Gum Wall, and the original Starbucks store (1971 logo; expect a queue).

Afternoon. Walk the new Seattle Waterfront park to the Seattle Aquarium and the Great Wheel, then visit Pioneer Square, the original downtown, and take the Underground Tour (about US$30-35) beneath the streets, built over after the Great Fire of 1889.

Evening. Take a ferry to Bainbridge Island (about 35 minutes; free for the return journey) at sunset for views of the skyline and the Olympic Mountains.

Washington State Ferries charge only westbound, so the return to Seattle is free for foot passengers.

Day 2: Seattle Center, Fremont and Ballard

Morning. Take the 1962 Monorail to Seattle Center: go up the Space Needle (about US$35-45), with a rotating glass floor, and visit Chihuly Garden and Glass, with huge colourful glass sculptures by Dale Chihuly (combination tickets available). Rock fans can visit the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP), designed by Frank Gehry.

Afternoon. Visit Fremont, the 'Center of the Universe', with the Fremont Troll under a bridge and a Soviet-era statue of Lenin. Continue to the Ballard Locks (Hiram M. Chittenden Locks) to see boats being raised and lowered and, in summer, salmon climbing the fish ladder.

Evening. Have dinner and craft beer in Ballard, with many breweries and seafood restaurants.

Visit Kerry Park in Queen Anne for the classic photo of the Space Needle with Mount Rainier behind it.

Day 3: Mount Rainier

Morning. Drive about 2-2.5 hours to Mount Rainier National Park (about US$30 per car). Go to Paradise, at 1,646 metres, for wildflower meadows (July-August), glaciers and the Skyline Trail (about 9 km, or shorter walks).

Afternoon. See the Narada Falls and Reflection Lakes, where the mountain reflects in the water on calm days. In the north-east, Sunrise (open from about July to September) is the highest point reachable by car.

Evening. Return to Seattle for a dinner of Dungeness crab or Pacific oysters.

Timed entry reservations have been required in summer for some park areas; check the National Park Service website.

Orca and whale-watching tours leave from Seattle, Anacortes and the San Juan Islands, mainly from April to October.

A guided walk through the original street level of Pioneer Square, buried when the city raised its streets after the Great Fire of 1889, with humorous stories of early Seattle.

Not in the city; for Mount Rainier, the Olympic Peninsula and the Cascade Mountains, yes.

What is the best view of the skyline?

Kerry Park in Queen Anne, the ferry to Bainbridge Island, the Space Needle, and the Sky View Observatory at the Columbia Center, the city's tallest building, which is often less crowded.
