Is Seattle safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Seattle is generally safe for visitors in the main tourist areas, though property crime is high by US standards. The realistic issues are car break-ins, petty theft, and visible homelessness and drug use in parts of downtown. Violent crime against tourists is uncommon.

The real risks

Car break-ins

Very common. Never leave anything visible in a parked car, including at viewpoints and trailheads.

Petty theft

Watch bags at Pike Place Market and on public transport.

Downtown street issues

Some blocks around Third Avenue and Pioneer Square have open drug use and disorder, especially at night. Stay aware and take a direct route.

Mountain conditions

Weather at Mount Rainier changes quickly and snow lingers into July. Carry layers and check road status.

Wet streets

Rain makes roads and hills slippery; take care walking and driving.

Areas and times to take care

Pike Place, the waterfront, Seattle Center, Capitol Hill, Queen Anne, Fremont and Ballard are comfortable for visitors. Parts of downtown around Third Avenue and some blocks of Pioneer Square and the International District can feel uncomfortable after dark; take a rideshare at night.

Getting around safely

Link light rail, buses and the monorail are generally safe; travel in busy carriages late at night. Uber and Lyft are widely used. Washington State Ferries are safe and scenic.

Solo and women travellers

Seattle is generally fine for solo women. Use rideshare late at night, avoid walking alone through quieter downtown blocks after dark, and keep drinks in sight in bars. On hikes, go in daylight and tell someone your route.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe and good. Summer wildfire smoke can affect air quality; check before outdoor trips. Healthcare is excellent but very expensive for visitors, so travel insurance is essential.

Emergency: 911
