How many days in Phuket? 5 days of beaches, islands and the old town

By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated

Phuket is Thailand's largest island and the base for its most famous seascapes. Five days gives a good mix: one for Old Phuket Town and the south's viewpoints, two for boat trips to Phang Nga Bay and the Phi Phi Islands, and two for the beaches. Where you stay matters more than anywhere: Patong is the party strip, while Kata, Karon and Nai Harn in the south are calmer and better for families. Travel between November and April, when the Andaman Sea is calm.

Short answer

5 days is the sweet spot3 days is the minimum worth it

Three days covers one boat trip, one beach day and the old town. Five days lets you do both big boat trips without spending every day on a speedboat.

The 5-day plan, day by day

Day 1: Old Phuket Town

Morning. Walk Old Phuket Town: Thalang Road, Soi Romanee and Dibuk Road, lined with pastel Sino-Portuguese shophouses built by tin-mining families in the 19th century. Visit the Thai Hua Museum in a former Chinese school and the Shrine of the Serene Light, hidden down an alley.

Afternoon. Have lunch on Mee Hokkien (stir-fried yellow noodles) or moo hong (braised pork belly), dishes from Phuket's Peranakan (Baba) culture, then a coffee in one of the old shophouses.

Evening. On a Sunday, the Lard Yai Walking Street market fills Thalang Road from 16:00. Other evenings, dinner in the old town's restaurants.

In the old town, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival (usually in October) brings processions and extreme rituals by spirit mediums; it is spectacular but not for the squeamish.

Day 2: Phang Nga Bay

Morning. Take a Phang Nga Bay tour (about 1,500-3,000 baht by longtail or speedboat; national park fees are extra). The highlight is sea-canoeing into hongs, lagoons hidden inside limestone islands, reached through low caves at the right tide.

Afternoon. Most tours stop at Ko Tapu, the rock spire known as James Bond Island from The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), and at Ko Panyee, a Muslim fishing village on stilts with a floating football pitch.

Evening. Return in the late afternoon. Dinner on Kata Beach or in Rawai, where seafood restaurants by the fishing pier cook what you buy at the market.

The John Gray's Sea Canoe style evening tours (sea caves at sunset, Loy Krathong-style candles) are quieter than the big day tours.

Day 3: The Phi Phi Islands

Morning. Take an early speedboat or the slower ferry to the Phi Phi Islands (about 1-2 hours). Maya Bay, the beach from the film The Beach, reopened in 2022 after years of closure to let the coral recover: swimming is not allowed, visits are timed, and the bay closes for part of the low season (around August-September).

Afternoon. Snorkel at Pileh Lagoon and Monkey Beach, or stay on Ko Phi Phi Don to climb to the viewpoint over the two bays (a small fee, about 30 minutes uphill).

Evening. Return to Phuket in the late afternoon, or stay a night on Phi Phi for the island after the day-trippers have left.

National park fees for the Phi Phi Islands (about 400 baht for foreigners) are usually paid on the day, in cash; check whether your tour includes them.

Day 4: The south: Big Buddha and the beaches

Morning. Visit the Big Buddha on Nakkerd Hill (free, donations welcome), a 45-metre white marble Buddha with a view over Chalong Bay, then Wat Chalong, the island's most important temple.

Afternoon. Swim at Nai Harn, a beach in a bay with a lake behind it and no high-rise hotels, or Kata Noi, small and calm.

Evening. Watch the sunset at Promthep Cape, Phuket's southern tip, or from the Karon viewpoint over three bays.

Respect the red flags on west-coast beaches: rip currents cause drownings every year, especially in the monsoon season.

Day 5: Beach day (or the Similan Islands)

Morning. Take a longtail boat to Freedom Beach, a secluded bay reachable mainly by sea from Patong, or relax at Kata, the best family beach, with surfing lessons in the monsoon season.

Afternoon. Have a Thai massage on the beach (about 300-500 baht an hour) and swim.

Evening. For nightlife, go to Bangla Road in Patong; for something quieter, a beach bar in Kata or a seafood dinner in Rawai.

From about October/November to May, divers and snorkellers can take a day trip to the Similan Islands (about 1.5 hours by speedboat from Khao Lak), among the best diving in Thailand. The park closes in the low season.

Only have 3 days?

With 3 days, do Day 1 combined with Day 4 (old town in the morning, Big Buddha and Promthep in the afternoon), then Phang Nga Bay and Phi Phi.

Got extra days?

With more time, go inland to Khao Sok National Park (about 3 hours) for its rainforest and floating bungalows on Cheow Lan Lake, or island-hop to Krabi and Ko Lanta.

Getting around

Phuket has few useful buses (the Smart Bus runs from the airport along the west-coast beaches for about 100 baht). Use Grab or Bolt: local taxis and tuk-tuks are expensive and rarely use meters. The airport is in the north, about 45-60 minutes from Patong or Kata. Scooters are widely rented, but road accidents are a serious risk and you need a valid licence.

What to eat in Phuket

Phuket's food mixes Thai, Chinese and Malay influences. Try Mee Hokkien, moo hong (braised pork belly with black pepper), kanom jeen (fermented rice noodles with curry, eaten at breakfast), gaeng som (sour fish curry) and o-tao (stir-fried taro with oysters). Seafood is the speciality: at Rawai's seafood market you buy fish, prawns or crabs from stalls and have them cooked at a restaurant opposite for about 100-200 baht per dish. Street meals cost 60-120 baht; beach restaurants charge more.

Best time to visit

November to April is the dry season, with calm seas, highs of 31-33°C and the clearest water; December to February is the busiest. May to October is the monsoon: rougher seas on the west coast, more rain, red flags on many beaches and some boat trips cancelled, but lower prices.

Common questions

Where should I stay in Phuket?

Kata or Karon for beaches and families, Patong for nightlife, Old Phuket Town for culture and value, and the north-west (Kamala, Surin) for luxury.

Can I swim at Maya Bay?

No. Since reopening in 2022, swimming is banned to protect the coral and the blacktip reef sharks. You can walk on the beach in timed slots; the bay closes for part of the low season.

Is Phuket good for families?

Yes: Kata, Karon and Nai Harn have shallow water in the dry season, and boat trips, elephant sanctuaries and waterparks keep children busy.

Can I visit Phuket in the monsoon?

Yes, with lower prices and fewer people, but some days are rainy, seas are rough and some boat trips are cancelled. The east-coast bays are calmer.

Is a speedboat or a big boat better for islands?

Speedboats are faster and visit more spots but are bumpy; big ferries are cheaper and steadier. Smaller-group tours that leave early avoid the crowds.
