Food tours in Phuket: what to eat and which tour to book

Phuket

Phuket has its own food, and it is not the same as Bangkok's. Hokkien Chinese tin miners settled here in the 19th century and married into local families, creating the Peranakan or 'Baba' community whose cooking defines Phuket Town: mee hokkien (yellow noodles in a seafood gravy), moo hong (pork belly braised with black pepper and garlic), oh-tao (a taro and oyster omelette) and dim sum breakfasts with strong local coffee. Southern Thai curries, much hotter than central Thai ones, and the halal cooking of the island's large Muslim community add to it. The island was named a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2015, but most visitors only see the beach-strip menus of Patong.

Street food, sit-down or a cooking class?

Street food

Street food in Phuket is cheapest and best in Phuket Town and at the night markets, not in the beach areas. Look for oh-tao, loba, grilled skewers, satay, roti from Muslim vendors and fresh fruit. Choose busy stalls and food cooked to order.

Sit-down meals

Sit-down options range from shophouse restaurants serving Phuket and southern Thai food to seafood restaurants on the coast and fine dining in resort areas. Prices in Patong, Kata and Karon are noticeably higher than in town. Lunch is the main meal at many local places; some Old Town shops close by mid-afternoon.

Cooking classes

Thai cooking classes are common in Phuket, often with a morning market visit to buy ingredients, then four or five dishes such as tom yum, green curry, pad thai and mango sticky rice. Some cover southern or Phuket dishes; ask. Hotel pick-up is often included from the main beach areas.

How much to budget for food

StylePer person, per day*
Budget (street food, markets)฿500–800, about €13–21 (khanom jeen breakfast, noodle lunch, night-market dinner)
Mid-range (one sit-down meal a day)฿1,500–2,500, about €40–65 (café breakfast, Old Town lunch, seafood or restaurant dinner with a drink)
Splurge (tasting menus, wine)฿5,000+, about €130+ (resort or fine-dining dinner with wine)

Vegetarian, halal and gluten-free

Vegetarian & vegan: Thai food uses fish sauce, shrimp paste and oyster sauce in most dishes, and many curry pastes contain shrimp paste. Say 'jay' (vegan, no animal products) or 'mang sa wirat' (vegetarian). Phuket Town's Chinese community observes the Vegetarian Festival (Nine Emperor Gods), roughly September or October, when vegan 'jay' food with yellow flags is everywhere.

Halal: Easier than in most of Thailand: roughly a quarter of Phuket's population is Muslim. Halal restaurants and stalls (look for the green halal sign) serve roti, massaman curry, satay, biryani and seafood, especially in Muslim villages around the island and parts of Phuket Town and Patong.

Gluten-free: Rice and rice noodles are the base, which helps, but soy sauce, oyster sauce and many seasoning sauces contain wheat, and Hokkien noodles are wheat-based. Carry a Thai-language card explaining you can't eat wheat or soy sauce. Grilled fish, som tam (check the sauce) and many curries with rice are safer.

Common questions

What food is Phuket known for?

Phuket's own dishes come from its Hokkien and Peranakan (Baba) community: mee hokkien noodles, moo hong braised pork, oh-tao taro omelette, loba fried snacks and dim sum breakfasts. Khanom jeen rice noodles with curry is the classic breakfast, and southern Thai curries such as gaeng som and gaeng tai pla are hotter than central Thai food. Phuket Old Town is where to eat them.

Is street food in Phuket safe?

Generally yes, if you pick busy stalls with food cooked in front of you. Be more careful with raw seafood, ice in remote areas and food left sitting in the heat. Don't drink tap water; bottled water is cheap everywhere. Ice in restaurants and bars is usually factory-made and safe.

Do I need to tip in Phuket?

Tipping is not traditional, but it is common in tourist areas. Leaving small change or about ฿20–50 at casual restaurants, or 5–10% at sit-down restaurants without a service charge, is appreciated. Check for '++' on menus, meaning service charge and VAT are added. Guides and drivers on tours usually appreciate a tip.

When is the Phuket Town Sunday Walking Street?

The Lard Yai walking street market runs on Thalang Road in Phuket Old Town on Sunday evenings, roughly from 16:00 to 22:00, with food stalls, snacks and crafts. It has been suspended at times, for example in the rainy season or for events, so check locally before going. Naka Weekend Market runs on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

How spicy is the food in Phuket?

Southern Thai food is the spiciest in Thailand. Curries like gaeng tai pla and gaeng som can be very hot even by Thai standards. Say 'mai phet' (not spicy) or 'phet nit noi' (a little spicy), and expect tourist-area restaurants to tone things down unless you ask. Phuket Hokkien dishes such as noodles and moo hong are mild.

How much should I budget for food per day?

Eating in Phuket Town and at night markets, about ฿500–800 (roughly €13–21) a day is enough. A mix of cafés, Old Town restaurants and a seafood dinner with a drink is roughly ฿1,500–2,500. Beach-area restaurants cost noticeably more, and resort dining can be ฿2,000–4,000 or more per person.
