How many days in the Maldives? 5 days: resort, local islands, reefs and mantas

By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated

The Maldives is 1,192 coral islands in 26 atolls, and the experience depends on one choice: a private resort island (one hotel per island, overwater villas, alcohol, seaplanes) or a local island (guesthouses, much cheaper, but no alcohol and modest dress outside the designated 'bikini beaches'). Five nights is the minimum to justify the long flight and transfers; it gives time to snorkel the house reef, join a trip to a sandbank, swim with whale sharks or mantas, and simply rest. Many people split their stay: a few nights on a local island and the rest at a resort.

Short answer

5 days is the sweet spot4 days is the minimum worth it

Four nights is enough to relax at one resort. Five or more let you combine the reef, a day trip and a second island.

Overwater villas and a lagoon in the Maldives

The 5-day plan, day by day

Day 1: Arrival and the house reef

Morning. Land at Velana International Airport on its own island next to Malé. Resorts meet you at the airport: speedboat transfers for nearby atolls (North and South Malé), seaplanes for further atolls (scenic flights of 30-60 minutes, often US$500-900 per person return), or a domestic flight plus boat.

Afternoon. Snorkel your island's house reef: on good reefs, you will see reef sharks, turtles, parrotfish and moray eels a few metres from the beach.

Evening. Sunset on the beach or from an overwater villa's deck, and dinner at the resort.

Seaplanes fly only in daylight. If your international flight arrives in the evening, you may need a night near the airport (Hulhumalé) before the transfer.

Day 2: Sandbank and snorkelling trip

Morning. Join a boat trip to a sandbank, a strip of white sand in the middle of the lagoon, for snorkelling and a picnic. Many resorts offer private sandbank breakfasts or dinners at a cost.

Afternoon. Snorkel at a nearby reef or a turtle point; green and hawksbill turtles are common.

Evening. Join a sunset dolphin cruise (about US$50-100 per person), when spinner dolphins often jump alongside the boat.

Wear reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard: the equatorial sun burns quickly, even through water.

Day 3: Whale sharks or mantas

Morning. In South Ari Atoll, whale sharks are seen all year in the marine protected area; tours (about US$100-150) follow strict guidelines. In Baa Atoll, the Hanifaru Bay reserve gathers hundreds of manta rays between about June and November (snorkelling only, with permits).

Afternoon. Diving is excellent everywhere: certified divers can explore channels (kandu) with sharks and eagle rays; beginners can try a discovery dive at the resort.

Evening. Dinner at the resort or a local guesthouse beach barbecue.

Book big-animal excursions at the start of your stay, so you have a backup day if the weather cancels the boat.

Day 4: A local island and Malé

Morning. Visit a local island (from resorts, often on an organised trip): see how Maldivians live, with mosques, schools and a small harbour. Popular guesthouse islands include Maafushi, Thulusdhoo (surfing) and Dhigurah (whale sharks).

Afternoon. Or, on your last day, take a speedboat to Malé: the 17th-century Hukuru Miskiy (Old Friday Mosque) built of coral stone, the fish market and the National Museum.

Evening. Have dinner in Hulhumalé near the airport.

On local islands, cover shoulders and knees outside the bikini beach, and remember that alcohol is not sold.

Day 5: Rest and departure

Morning. Spend the last morning in the water: snorkel, kayak, paddleboard or take a spa treatment.

Afternoon. Transfer back to the airport by speedboat or seaplane, leaving enough time (seaplanes may require you to leave early).

Evening. Depart, or stay one more night: most travellers wish they had.

Check with your resort when the last transfer to the airport leaves; seaplane schedules are set the day before.

Only have 4 days?

With 4 nights, choose a resort close to the airport (North or South Malé Atoll) reached by speedboat to save transfer time and cost.

Got extra days?

With more time, split your stay between two resorts in different atolls, or between a local island and a resort, or take a liveaboard dive cruise for a week.

Getting around

Everything depends on boats and seaplanes. Your resort or guesthouse arranges transfers; public ferries to local islands are very cheap but slow and do not run every day, and shared speedboats are faster. Domestic flights reach southern and northern atolls. Malé is walkable, and a bridge links it to the airport and Hulhumalé.

What to eat in Maldives

Resorts serve international buffets and specialty restaurants, often on half-board or all-inclusive plans. Try Maldivian dishes: mas huni (shredded tuna with coconut, onion and chilli, eaten with roshi flatbread for breakfast), garudhiya (clear tuna broth), and hedhikaa, the savoury snacks (fish cakes, samosas) eaten with tea. On local islands, meals in guesthouses cost US$10-25. Alcohol is available only at resorts and on liveaboards, where a cocktail costs US$15-25.

Best time to visit

December to April is the dry north-east monsoon season, with calm seas and sunshine; it is the most expensive. May to November brings the south-west monsoon, with more rain and wind but lower prices, and the best time for manta rays in Baa Atoll and good surfing. Temperatures are about 28-31°C all year.

Common questions

Resort or local island?

Resorts for privacy, overwater villas, alcohol and all-inclusive comfort; local islands for low prices and an authentic experience, with modest dress and no alcohol. Many combine both.

Seaplane or speedboat?

Speedboats for resorts near Malé (cheaper, any time of day); seaplanes for further atolls (spectacular views, daylight only, expensive).

Which atoll is best for snorkelling?

South Ari for whale sharks, Baa for mantas (June to November), and many resorts in all atolls have excellent house reefs. Check reviews of the house reef before booking.

Is the Maldives only for honeymooners?

No: families, divers and budget travellers on local islands come too. Some resorts are adults-only, others have kids' clubs.

Can I drink alcohol?

Only on resort islands and liveaboard boats. It is illegal to bring alcohol into the country, and it is not sold on local islands.

What are the hidden costs?

Transfers, taxes (service charge, GST and green tax), excursions and drinks. Compare full-board or all-inclusive plans with room-only.

When is the best time for mantas and whale sharks?

Mantas in Baa's Hanifaru Bay from about June to November; whale sharks in South Ari all year.
