Is Maldives safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Resorts and local tourist islands in the Maldives are very safe, with little crime affecting visitors. The realistic risks are sea-related (currents, sunburn, boat safety) and respecting local laws on conservative inhabited islands. Malé has occasional political protests and petty theft, but most visitors only transit.

The real risks

Currents and channels

Strong currents run through channels between reefs; snorkel with a guide and do not swim far from the house reef.

Sun and heat

UV is extreme; use reef-safe sunscreen, rash vests and shade.

Local laws

Inhabited islands follow Islamic law: no alcohol, and modest dress is expected away from designated 'bikini beaches'.

Boat safety

Choose licensed operators with life jackets, especially for speedboat transfers in rough weather.

Petty theft

Rare, but secure valuables in guesthouses and in Malé.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas to avoid for visitors. In Malé, avoid political demonstrations. Local islands are calm and family-oriented; respect prayer times and dress codes in villages.

Getting around safely

Use transfers arranged by your resort or guesthouse. Public ferries are safe but slow and do not run every day; speedboats can be bumpy in monsoon weather. Taxis in Malé and Hulhumalé are cheap and safe.

Solo and women travellers

Solo women generally feel safe at resorts and tourist-oriented local islands. On inhabited islands, cover shoulders and knees outside bikini beaches and expect a conservative atmosphere.

Health, water and heat

Resorts usually provide desalinated or bottled water; on local islands drink bottled or filtered water. The heat is constant (about 28–30°C), and dengue occurs; use repellent. Medical facilities are limited outside Malé, so travel insurance with evacuation cover is important for divers.

Emergency: 119 police, 102 ambulance, 118 fire.
