How many days in Florianópolis? 4 days of island beaches, lagoon villages and oysters

By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated

Florianópolis, 'Floripa' to Brazilians, is a state capital spread over Santa Catarina island in southern Brazil, about 54 km long, with dozens of beaches, a large lagoon in the middle and fishing villages settled by families from the Azores in the 18th century. Give it four days and split the island by direction: the Centro and the bay villages for history and oysters, Lagoa da Conceição and the east-coast surf beaches, the wild south for trails and Campeche island, and the north for calm water. Traffic is heavy in summer, so plan one area a day.

Short answer

4 days is the sweet spot3 days is the minimum worth it

Three days covers the Centro, the lagoon and Joaquina, and one trail or island in the south. Four days adds Campeche island or Lagoinha do Leste and an oyster lunch in Ribeirão da Ilha.

The 4-day plan, day by day

Day 1: The Centro, the bridge and Santo Antônio de Lisboa

Morning. Start at the Mercado Público, the yellow 19th-century market, with fish stalls and bars where locals drink chope and eat fried fish at lunchtime. Walk 5 minutes to Praça XV de Novembro and its huge old fig tree, the Figueira, and the Catedral Metropolitana above the square.

Afternoon. Walk or take a taxi to the Hercílio Luz bridge, the long white suspension bridge to the mainland, opened in 1926, restored and reopened to pedestrians, cyclists and buses in 2019. Then drive about 25 minutes north to Santo Antônio de Lisboa, an Azorean village on the bay with a small church and cobbled lanes.

Evening. Watch the sunset over the bay from Santo Antônio's waterfront restaurants and order ostras (oysters), raw, gratinated or steamed, farmed in the bays of the island; a dozen costs about R$40-70. A full seafood dinner runs R$100-180 per person.

Santo Antônio de Lisboa faces west, one of the few places on the island where the sun sets over the water. Book a table near the shore for Friday and Saturday evenings.

Day 2: Lagoa da Conceição, Joaquina and Costa da Lagoa

Morning. Drive about 20 minutes from the Centro over the hill to Lagoa da Conceição, a large saltwater lagoon in the middle of the island. Stop at the Mirante da Lagoa viewpoint on the way, then take the boat from the centre of Lagoa to Costa da Lagoa, a fishing village with no road access (about 40-60 minutes each way; a small fare, check at the pier).

Afternoon. Back in Lagoa, go 10 minutes to Joaquina, a famous surf beach backed by tall dunes where you can rent a board and try sandboarding (about R$30-50 an hour). Or swim at Praia Mole, a surfers' beach between granite boulders.

Evening. Lagoa is the island's nightlife centre. Eat in its streets of bars and restaurants, about R$70-130 per person, and try a sequência de camarão, a set of shrimp dishes served one after another.

Joaquina and Praia Mole often have strong currents. Swim near the lifeguard towers and ask them which part of the beach is safe that day.

Day 3: The south: Lagoinha do Leste and Ribeirão da Ilha

Morning. Drive about 40-50 minutes to Pântano do Sul, a fishing village at the southern end of the island, and hike to Lagoinha do Leste, a beach with a freshwater lagoon behind it, reachable only on foot (about 1-1.5 hours each way through forest, steep in parts). Take water and food: there are no shops at the beach.

Afternoon. Return to Pântano do Sul for a late fish lunch facing the sea, then drive about 30 minutes up the west coast to Ribeirão da Ilha, one of the oldest Azorean settlements on the island, with a church from the 19th century, colourful houses and oyster farms in the bay.

Evening. Eat oysters again, this time at a Ribeirão restaurant built over the water, about R$100-160 per person, and watch the lights of the mainland across the bay.

Lagoinha do Leste can also be reached from Matadeiro beach by a longer coastal trail, about 2 hours. Only walk it in dry weather: the rocks are slippery when wet.

Day 4: Campeche island or the calm north

Morning. Take a boat from Armação or Campeche beach to Ilha do Campeche, a small protected island with clear water and prehistoric rock carvings (about R$100-150 return, 10-30 minutes; visitor numbers are limited in summer, so book ahead). Snorkel off the beach and walk the island's short trail with a local guide.

Afternoon. Or, on a windy day, go to the sheltered north of the island: Jurerê with its calm water and beach clubs, or Praia do Forte, where the Fortaleza de São José da Ponta Grossa, an 18th-century Portuguese fort, stands on a headland (a small fee).

Evening. Last dinner in Lagoa da Conceição or the Centro. In winter (around May to July), look for tainha, mullet, the island's traditional fish, grilled or stuffed.

Boats to Campeche island only run in good weather and have a daily visitor cap from about December to March; book through an authorised boat association.

Only have 3 days?

With 3 days, do the Centro and Santo Antônio de Lisboa, then Lagoa with Joaquina, then either Campeche island or Lagoinha do Leste. You lose the north and Ribeirão da Ilha.

Got extra days?

Extra days go to Guarda do Embaú, a surf village at a river mouth about 1 hour south, or to Garopaba and Praia do Rosa, about 1.5-2 hours south, where southern right whales come close to the coast from about July to November.

Getting around

Hercílio Luz airport is in the south of the island, about 20-30 minutes from the Centro and Lagoa. A car or Uber is the easiest way around: rides cost about R$25-70 across the island, but traffic jams can double journey times in January and February. Local buses connect through terminals such as TICEN in the Centro and TILAG in Lagoa (about R$6-7 a ride). Car rental costs about R$120-250 a day.

What to eat in Florianopolis

Florianópolis is Brazil's oyster capital: most of the country's farmed oysters and mussels come from its bays. Eat ostras raw or gratinated, sequência de camarão, tainha in winter, and pirão, a fish broth thickened with cassava flour. Azorean heritage shows in fish stews and in the engenhos (old flour mills). Try açaí and pastéis on the beach. A beach lunch costs R$50-90; a seafood dinner R$100-200 per person.

Best time to visit

November to April is beach season, with highs of 26-30°C. January, February and Carnival bring huge crowds, traffic and high prices. March, April and November are warm and calmer. Winter, June to August, is cool, 13-20°C, and good for hiking, but the sea is cold. From July to November, whales visit the coast south of the island.

Common questions

Which part of Florianópolis is best to stay in?

For a first visit, Lagoa da Conceição is the most central: 15-20 minutes from the Centro, the east-coast beaches and the south. Stay in the north (Jurerê, Canasvieiras) for calm water with children, in the south (Campeche, Armação) for quieter beaches and trails, and in the Centro only if you are here for business or a short stop.

Do I need a car in Florianópolis?

Not necessarily. Uber is cheap and available across the island, and buses connect all main beaches through central terminals, though journeys can be slow. A car is useful for the far south and for beach-hopping, but parking is difficult and traffic very heavy in January and February. Many visitors rent a car for one or two days only.

Is the sea warm enough to swim?

From December to April, yes: the water is around 22-25°C. In winter it drops to about 17-19°C. The east-coast beaches, like Joaquina and Moçambique, have stronger waves and currents; the beaches on the bays and in the north, like Jurerê, Daniela and Santo Antônio de Lisboa, are calmer.

Is Florianópolis safe?

Florianópolis is generally considered one of the safer state capitals in Brazil, especially in its beach districts. Still, do not leave things alone on the beach, avoid showing phones and jewellery in the Centro at night, and use Uber or registered taxis after dark. Ask your accommodation which areas to avoid.
