Where the money goes

Accommodation is the main cost, especially from late December to Carnival, when prices rise sharply and minimum stays are common. Food is good value, with Brazil's cheapest fresh oysters, though beach-club and Jurerê prices are high. Transport is affordable by Uber, but traffic in high summer adds time. Most beaches and trails are free; boat trips are the main paid extras.

When it is cheaper

March, April and November are warm and noticeably cheaper than January and February, and winter, from June to August, has the lowest prices.
