How many days in Abu Dhabi? 3 days: the Grand Mosque, Saadiyat and Yas Island

By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated

The UAE's capital is calmer and greener than Dubai, with a stronger focus on culture. Three days covers its three districts: the city island with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the presidential palace Qasr Al Watan and the old fort Qasr Al Hosn; Saadiyat Island with the Louvre Abu Dhabi and a white-sand beach; and Yas Island, with Ferrari World and the Formula 1 circuit. Taxis are the main transport, and distances are long, so group each day by island.

Short answer

3 days is the sweet spot2 days is the minimum worth it

Two days covers the Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan and the Louvre with Saadiyat Beach. The third adds Yas Island or the desert.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi

The 3-day plan, day by day

Day 1: The Grand Mosque and Qasr Al Watan

Morning. Visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (free; book a time slot online), one of the world's largest, with 82 white marble domes, the world's largest hand-knotted carpet and enormous crystal chandeliers. It is closed to visitors on Friday mornings for prayers. Women must cover hair, arms and legs; abayas can be borrowed.

Afternoon. Go to Qasr Al Watan (about AED 65), the working presidential palace, open to visitors, with a vast domed Great Hall and a library of Arab knowledge. Allow 2 hours.

Evening. Stay for the evening light show projected on the palace façade (extra ticket), or return to the Grand Mosque at sunset, when the marble glows and the reflecting pools light up.

Combine the Grand Mosque and Qasr Al Watan on the same day: they are about 20 minutes apart by taxi, both in the south of the city island.

Day 2: Saadiyat Island and the city's heritage

Morning. Visit the Louvre Abu Dhabi (about AED 63) under Jean Nouvel's 180-metre lattice dome, which lets in a 'rain of light'. The galleries tell a world history of art from prehistory to today, with loans from French museums. Allow 2-3 hours.

Afternoon. Swim at Saadiyat Beach, a long white beach where hawksbill turtles nest. Then visit Qasr Al Hosn (about AED 30), the city's oldest stone building, the fort from which Abu Dhabi grew.

Evening. Walk the Corniche, 8 km of seafront with beaches and cycle paths, and watch the skyline from the Etihad Towers observation deck at 300 metres (Observation Deck at 300), then dinner in the city.

Check whether the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and the Zayed National Museum, both on Saadiyat's cultural district, have opened during your visit.

Day 3: Mangroves and Yas Island (or the desert)

Morning. Kayak or paddleboard through the Mangrove National Park (about AED 150-250 for a guided tour), a calm green maze of channels with herons and crabs, minutes from the city centre. Early morning is coolest.

Afternoon. Spend the afternoon on Yas Island: Ferrari World (about AED 345), home of one of the fastest roller coasters in the world, Warner Bros. World or Yas Waterworld; or take the circuit tour of the Yas Marina Formula 1 track.

Evening. Dinner at Yas Bay Waterfront. Alternatively, spend this day on a desert safari: the closest dunes are about 45-60 minutes away, and the giant dunes of the Liwa Oasis are about 2.5-3 hours away, best with an overnight stay.

Yas theme-park tickets are much cheaper as multi-park passes if you plan two parks over two days.

Only have 2 days?

With 2 days, do Day 1, and the Louvre with Saadiyat Beach on Day 2.

Got extra days?

With more time, drive to Al Ain (about 1.5 hours), a UNESCO oasis city with forts, date-palm groves and Jebel Hafeet mountain, or combine Abu Dhabi with Dubai (about 1.5 hours by road).

Getting around

Use taxis, Uber or Careem: they are reasonably priced and the city is not designed for walking. Public buses use the Hafilat card, and free shuttles connect some attractions on Yas and Saadiyat. The airport is about 30 minutes from the centre and 15 minutes from Yas Island. From Dubai, buses and taxis take about 1.5 hours.

What to eat in Abu Dhabi

Try Emirati food at restaurants such as Al Mrzab or Mezlai: machboos (spiced rice with meat or fish), harees, saloona (vegetable stew), and luqaimat with date syrup for dessert, with Arabic coffee (gahwa) and dates. Abu Dhabi has excellent Lebanese and Indian food in the city centre, where a meal costs AED 40-80. Alcohol is served in licensed hotels and restaurants. During Ramadan, try an iftar buffet at sunset.

Best time to visit

November to March, with highs of 24-30°C, is the season for the Corniche, beaches and the desert. April and October are hot. June to September is very hot (often above 42°C) and humid; hotels are cheaper and life moves indoors. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in late November or December fills hotels on Yas Island.

Common questions

Do I need to book the Grand Mosque?

Booking a free time slot online is recommended and sometimes required. Arrive dressed correctly; long, loose clothing is needed, and women must cover their hair.

Abu Dhabi or Dubai?

Abu Dhabi for culture (the Grand Mosque, the Louvre, Qasr Al Watan), quieter beaches and theme parks; Dubai for the skyline, shopping and nightlife. They are 1.5 hours apart and easy to combine.

Is Abu Dhabi good for families?

Very: calm beaches, theme parks on Yas Island, mangrove kayaking and safe, clean streets.

Can I swim at public beaches?

Yes: the Corniche beaches (some with a small fee) and Saadiyat public beach. Wear normal swimwear on the beach and cover up when leaving.

Is the desert worth it?

Yes, especially an overnight in Liwa, where the dunes are among the highest in the world. Closer half-day safaris are easier but less dramatic.

What are the Grand Mosque's opening rules on Fridays?

The mosque closes to visitors on Friday mornings for the main weekly prayer and reopens in the afternoon. Visits are free but must follow the dress code, and children are welcome with an adult. Photography is allowed in most areas, but not of people praying.
