Is Abu Dhabi expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Abu Dhabi is expensive by Middle Eastern standards and roughly on a par with Dubai or a Western European capital, with a mid-range day costing about AED 880 per person. Hotels and alcohol are where it hurts; taxis, everyday food and the biggest cultural sight, the Grand Mosque, are cheap or free.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest cost: mid-range hotels on the Corniche, Al Maryah or Yas Island run about AED 450–800 a night for a double, and hotels add a tourism fee per room per night, service charges and VAT on top of the quoted rate. The second big item is paid attractions: the Yas Island theme parks cost around AED 300–350 each, and desert safaris and mangrove kayak tours are AED 150–300 or more. Alcohol is only served in licensed hotels and venues and is heavily priced. Against that, taxis and ride-hailing are reasonable, cafeteria food and South Asian or Levantine restaurants are cheap, and the Grand Mosque, the Corniche and the public beaches cost nothing.
When it is cheaper
From June to September, when it is very hot (often above 40°C), hotel rates fall sharply, often by a third or more, and resorts run summer offers. Prices peak from November to March and especially around the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in late November or December.
How to spend less
- Visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Corniche and Saadiyat public beach, which are free.
- If you plan two Yas Island parks, buy a multi-park pass rather than single tickets.
- Check the full price of a hotel including tourism fee, service charge and VAT before comparing.
- Eat at cafeterias and Indian, Pakistani or Lebanese restaurants in the city centre for AED 20–40 a meal.
- Buy a Hafilat card for buses, and use them for straight-line routes along the city island.
- Skip hotel-bar drinking or use happy hours; duty-free at arrival is far cheaper than bar prices.
