Is Osaka expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Osaka is good value for a major Japanese city, a little cheaper than Tokyo or Kyoto for hotels and noticeably cheaper than Western European capitals for food. A budget day is about ¥9,700 (roughly €60) per person and a mid-range day about ¥21,000; Universal Studios Japan and splurge meals are where costs jump.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the main daily cost: budget hotels around Shin-Imamiya and Tennoji cost about ¥8,000–14,000 a double, Namba and Shinsaibashi ¥14,000–25,000 and high-rise hotels in Umeda ¥35,000 and up, plus a local accommodation tax above a set price. Food can be very cheap (konbini breakfasts, udon, takoyaki) or expensive at Kuromon Market's wagyu and sea-urchin stalls and in kaiseki restaurants. Sightseeing is moderate except Universal Studios Japan, whose tickets and Express Passes can cost more than a day's budget. Transport within the city is cheap.
When it is cheaper
Hotel prices are usually lower in January–February (after New Year), in June's rainy season and in parts of December; they peak during cherry blossom (late March to early April), Golden Week (late April to early May) and the autumn leaf season.
How to spend less
- Eat lunch sets (teishoku) at restaurants, much cheaper than the same meal at dinner.
- Buy breakfast and snacks at convenience stores (konbini).
- Stay in Tennoji or Shin-Imamiya for lower prices and direct trains to Kansai Airport and Shinsekai.
- Use an ICOCA card or phone wallet and walk between Namba and Shinsaibashi rather than taking short subway rides.
- Visit USJ on a weekday outside Japanese school holidays, when ticket prices and queues are lower.
- Compare a sit-down sushi lunch with Kuromon's per-item prices; it is often cheaper.
