Is Nara expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Nara is affordable by Japanese standards and cheaper than Kyoto for rooms, while temple tickets are modest. A mid-range day is about ¥21,000 per person, with the room taking about half. Compared with Western Europe, eating out and transport are good value, especially with the weak yen.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the main cost, especially ryokan with kaiseki dinner (¥45,000-120,000), though business hotels near JR Nara are cheap. Temple and shrine tickets add up if you visit many, at ¥500-1,600 each. Food is fair: simple restaurants and convenience stores are cheap, while kaiseki is a splurge. Transport is cheap because central Nara is walkable and trains to Kyoto and Osaka cost under ¥800.
When it is cheaper
January, February and early summer (June, outside holidays) are usually the cheapest for rooms. Cherry blossom season (late March to mid-April), Golden Week (early May) and the autumn leaves (mid-November to early December) push prices up; check current rates.
How to spend less
- Visit Nara as a base rather than a day trip: rooms are cheaper than in Kyoto.
- Use the free sights: Nara Park, Nigatsu-do, Yoshikien garden and the Heijo Palace site.
- Take the Kintetsu local or express trains rather than the limited express.
- Eat lunch sets (teishoku) and convenience-store breakfasts.
- Pick the most important temple halls instead of paying for every sub-temple.
- Use an ICOCA or Suica card for trains and buses.
