Nara on a budget: how to do it well

Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay near JR Nara station in business hotels and hostels, at about ¥8,000-14,000 for a double, with easy trains to Horyu-ji, Kyoto and Osaka. Hostel dorm beds cost less.
Getting around cheaply
Walk the centre; Kintetsu Nara to Todai-ji is 15-20 minutes. From Kyoto, the Kintetsu line costs ¥760; from Osaka Namba, about ¥680. From Kansai Airport, the limousine bus takes about 1.5 hours.

More ways to save
- Buy one pack of deer crackers only; the deer are just as happy to bow for photos.
- Choose Horyu-ji or Yakushi-ji if you only have budget for one outer temple.
- Walk rather than taking city buses for short hops in the centre.
- Visit in winter for cheaper rooms and quiet temples.
- Use free hot water and tea in hostels and hotels.
- Combine Nara with a stop at Fushimi Inari on the JR Nara line from Kyoto.
