Is Myanmar expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Day-to-day costs in Myanmar are low by international standards, but tourist prices are higher than in neighbouring Thailand or Laos once you add hotel rates (often quoted in US dollars), zone fees and internal flights. A budget day is very roughly K125,000 per person and a mid-range day about K260,000. The kyat has lost much of its value since 2021, and the market rate differs from the official one, so prices change quickly.

| Food & drink | K25,000 | K50,000 | K110,000 |
| Sights & tickets | K20,000 | K35,000 | K60,000 |
| Local transport | K20,000 | K45,000 | K90,000 |

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost, as hotels licensed for foreigners often quote in US dollars and options are limited in many towns. Zone fees at Bagan and Inle Lake, internal flights or long bus journeys, and private boat or driver hire add more. Food in tea shops, markets and local restaurants is cheap. Because of sanctions and banking problems, foreign cards often fail, so travellers must carry clean US dollar notes and exchange them, which affects the effective cost of everything.
When it is cheaper
Hotel rates are lower in the monsoon (June to October) and the hot season (March to May). The cool season from November to February is the traditional peak, though visitor numbers are far below pre-2021 levels.
How to spend less
- Bring new, unmarked US dollar notes (2017 series or newer) and exchange at banks or licensed changers.
- Eat at tea shops and local restaurants, where meals cost a fraction of hotel prices.
- Rent an e-bike in Bagan rather than hiring a car and driver.
- Check current zone fees locally, as they have changed several times.
- Book hotels directly where possible to avoid card surcharges.
- Travel overland by established bus companies where it is safe and allowed, instead of flying.
