Is Medellin expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Medellín is cheap by European or North American standards, though El Poblado's restaurants and hotels have pushed prices up compared with the rest of Colombia. Plan on about COP 155,000 a day per person on a budget, COP 380,000 mid-range and COP 860,000 for comfort. Hotels in El Poblado and nights out are the main costs; the metro, menú del día lunches and many sights are very cheap or free.

Where the money goes
Accommodation takes the biggest share, especially in El Poblado around Provenza and Parque Lleras, where hotels cost much more than in Laureles or Envigado. Eating out is cheap at lunch, when locals eat the menú del día, but the modern restaurants and cocktail bars of El Poblado are priced close to international levels. Tours — Comuna 13, coffee farms, Guatapé — are the next cost. Getting around is very cheap thanks to the metro and low taxi fares, though the airport in Rionegro is 45–60 minutes away.
When it is cheaper
Prices are fairly stable through the year, but hotels fill and rates rise during the Feria de las Flores in early August and over Christmas and New Year. February, March and September to November are usually quieter.
How to spend less
- Stay in Laureles or Estadio instead of El Poblado for cheaper, quieter guesthouses near the metro.
- Eat the menú del día at lunch, the cheapest full meal in the city.
- Use the metro and Metrocable; Line K is included in the fare.
- Take the shared airport bus to San Diego (about COP 20,000) instead of a taxi (COP 100,000–130,000).
- Join a free walking tour of the centre, and tip what it was worth.
- Take the public bus from the Terminal del Norte to Guatapé rather than a tour.
